  • Ski holidays in Mt. Baker

Mt. Baker USA North America Heart Classics Memoirs Historical Fiction Novels Mysteries Comedy Km piste Min Height (m) Max Height (m) 100 1070 1525 Sub Area Multi-Area Collection No No Description Mt. Baker Ski Area: Located in the North Cascades of Washington state, Mt. Baker Ski Area is renowned for its incredible snowfall and challenging terrain, making it a paradise for advanced skiers and snowboarders. With its remote and rugged location, the resort offers a unique and authentic experience for winter sports enthusiasts. Mt. Baker has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s when skiing first gained popularity in the area. It started as a small community ski area and has since grown into a well-known destination for powder hounds. Unlike many purpose-built resorts, Mt. Baker retains a rustic charm with a focus on the natural environment rather than commercial development. Access to the ski area is relatively straightforward, as it is directly accessible from the Mount Baker Highway (State Route 542). Visitors can drive up to the resort and park near the base area. Alternatively, there are shuttle services available from nearby towns, such as Bellingham. One of the standout features of Mt. Baker Ski Area is the ability to ski back to your vehicle. The resort offers a unique "Ride Home" program that allows skiers and snowboarders to access backcountry terrain from the ski area and then return to their vehicles parked at the base. This gives experienced riders the opportunity to explore the pristine wilderness surrounding the resort. As for the après-ski scene, Mt. Baker has a more laid-back atmosphere compared to some of the larger resorts. There are a few cozy lodges and bars where visitors can relax and unwind after a day on the slopes. However, it's worth noting that the focus here is primarily on the skiing and snowboarding experience rather than a vibrant nightlife. Mt. Baker Ski Area caters primarily to advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders. The resort is known for its challenging and diverse terrain, including steep chutes, deep powder bowls, and thrilling tree runs. While there are options for beginners and intermediates, the abundance of advanced terrain truly sets Mt. Baker apart. In conclusion, Mt. Baker Ski Area offers a unique and authentic skiing experience in the North Cascades of Washington. With its exceptional snowfall, challenging terrain, and access to backcountry skiing, it is a haven for advanced skiers and snowboarders seeking adventure in a rustic and natural setting. While the après-ski scene may be more low-key, the focus on the sport itself and the incredible terrain make Mt. Baker a must-visit destination for powder enthusiasts. Nestled in the South Tyrol region, Val Gardena offers stunning alpine scenery, a rich history, and world-class skiing opportunities. The ski area is part of the larger Dolomiti Superski region, which boasts an extensive collection of ski areas across the Dolomites. When it comes to accessing the ski area, Val Gardena offers excellent connections. The resort is well-served by efficient lift systems, providing direct access to the slopes from various points within the villages. It's spilt into 2 seperate areas, accessed from different towns. The key towns are Selva Wolkenstein and St Christina (one interconnected area) and Ortisei St Ultrich and Susi (Alpe di susi ski area) Selva area connects direct to the world renowned ski circuit, the Sella Ronda - so stay here if you're wanting to ski this route and connect to the Alta Badia, Val di fassa and Arabba areas. This will require the wider Dolomiti SuperSki pass, rather than the local Val Gardena. A ski bus link or a car is required to ski both ski areas in Val Gardena, no town has access to both. Ortisei and St Christina are your best options to straddle both areas in your stay. Selva di Val Gardena, also known as Wolkenstein, is the largest and most vibrant town, offering a bustling atmosphere, a wide range of accommodations, and a lively après-ski scene. It's a popular choice for those seeking a lively social experience and convenient access to the slopes. In contrast, Ortisei, the main town of Val Gardena, exudes a more traditional and relaxed ambiance. It features picturesque streets lined with charming shops, boutiques, and restaurants, showcasing the region's rich cultural heritage. Lastly, Santa Cristina, nestled between Selva di Val Gardena and Ortisei, strikes a balance between the two. All 3 of these sit in the core "Val Gardena". Alpe di Susi is an area in its own right, and there's several towns outside Val Gardena that connect in, Castelrotto (Kastelruth) is the largest town in the area and serves as a gateway to the ski slopes. It features a traditional Tyrolean atmosphere with colorful facades, cozy cafes, and historical landmarks. Siusi allo Sciliar (Seis am Schlern) is another enchanting town known for its idyllic setting at the foot of the imposing Sciliar massif. It offers a blend of traditional Alpine architecture, charming shops, and excellent dining options. Finally, Compatsch (Compaccio) is a smaller village located directly on the Alpe di Siusi plateau. Val Gardena is particularly well-suited for intermediate skiers, offering a wide range of red (intermediate) runs that provide enjoyable challenges and breathtaking views. In addition to its exceptional skiing opportunities, Val Gardena also has a vibrant après-ski scene. The village offers a diverse selection of restaurants, bars, and cafés where visitors can relax and socialize after a day on the slopes. Espace Lumière France Europe Heart Gap Pra Loup Val d’Allos Km piste Min Height (m) Max Height (m) 180 1608 2576 Sub Area Multi-Area Collection No No Description Espace Lumière is a stunning ski area situated in the French Alps, spanning across the border between the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Alpes-Maritimes. The ski area is a result of the merger of two resorts, Pra Loup and Val d'Allos, which joined forces to create Espace Lumière. Pra Loup is a purpose-built ski resort, known for its modern infrastructure and excellent facilities. It was developed in the 1960s and has since become a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts. Val d'Allos, on the other hand, is a traditional alpine village with a rich history. The village has preserved its charming character and provides visitors with an authentic mountain experience. Espace Lumière is well-connected, allowing easy access to the ski slopes. From Pra Loup, skiers can enjoy direct access to the bulk of the ski area, while Val d'Allos has a smaller direct area, mainly comprising of Blue runs. Between the 2 areas lies a valley, through which you must transfer to reach the other resort. It is important to note that the connecting slopes are all Red or Black , so for beginner skiers, choosing the home resort is very important. Absolute beginners would be fine in either, but those finding their feet might find the selection in Val d'Allos limiting. When it comes to the après-ski scene, Espace Lumière offers a vibrant and lively atmosphere. In Pra Loup, visitors can find a variety of bars, restaurants, and clubs where they can unwind and socialize after a day on the slopes. Val d'Allos, with its traditional village ambiance, provides a more relaxed après-ski experience, with cozy mountain chalets and charming local establishments. Overall, Espace Lumière offers a fantastic ski experience with its diverse terrain, convenient access, and lively après-ski scene. Whether you're a beginner or an expert skier, this ski area has something to offer for everyone, making it an excellent choice for a winter getaway in the French Alps.
